Dr. Florian Stammler

Main fields of research:

Stammler specialised in Arctic social anthropology, particularly the Russian North. His topical interests lie in economic anthropology, pastoralism studies, reindeer herding, indigenous knowledge, fossil resources and political economy, arctic economic systems, and centre-periphery relations.

Since 2003 post doctoral research associate at the Scott Polar Research Institute, Cambridge University, UK. • 2000–2004 PhD at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle/Saale. Title of dissertation: "When Reindeer Nomads Meet the Market: Culture, Property and Globalisation at the End of the Land." • 1994–2000 studied Ethnology, Sociology and History in Mainz, Zürich and Cologne, completed with an M.A. Thesis called "Überlebensstrategien im postsozialistschen Rußland: Das Beispiel der rentierzüchtenden Khanty und Nenzen in Nordwestsibirien". (Strategies of Survival in postsocialist Russia: The example of the reindeer herding Khanty and Nenets in northwestern Siberia).
