Space and Mobility in Syria and Palestine at the time of the Neo-Assyrian and Neo-Babylonian Empire

Programme

The project B7 consists of a general part (A) and a case study (B). Complementary to project B4 ( Mesopotamia), the general part deals with the historical territorial aspects of space and mobility in Syria and Palestine from the 9th to the 6th century BCE. Palestine is the main area of research. Part B studies (parallel to Part A) the consequences of Assyrian and Babylonian dominion in Southern Palestine for the nomadic and sedentary population groups and their interaction processes through a case study, namely the excavation at the site of Qubur al- Walaydah.

Part A will deal with a combined methodological approach considering the Assyriological perspective and also the point of view of Biblical studies. The research is based primary on the written original material, namely the cuneiform sources from the Neo-Assyrian and Neo-Babylonian periods as well as West-Semitic sources other than the Hebrew Bible. Furthermore, relevant archaeological and iconographical sources will be considered. The aim of the project is to investigate the space concepts in the texts, the operative and symbolic dimensions of space as well as the different types of mobility and the symbolic aspects of mobility. The results will be presented in a monograph. Moreover, the measures concerning the optimisation and organisation of space and mobility control in Palestine undertaken by the Assyrian and Babylonian rulers, and the technological innovations in this region will be surveyed and documented in a Technological Atlas.

The excavation at Qubur al-Walaydah near Beersheba (Israel) is an excellent case study (Part B) for the subject matter of Project B7. After a survey (2005) and a first archaeological campaign (2007) the site can be classified as a village and a market-place of the nomads in the Negev, of peasants and also as a distribution centre in two directions (Gaza and Beersheba). At Qubur al-Walaydah it will be possible to investigate the interaction between nomads and sedentary people on the base of new archaeological material. One survey (2008) and three campaigns (2009-2011) are planned in cooperation with Prof. G. Lehmann and Prof. S. Rosen (Beersheba/Israel) and Prof. H. M. Niemann (Rostock).
