Nomads and Sedentaries in Hellenistic Syria

PROGRAMMe

The project tries to analyse different aspects of the relations between nomads and sedentary peoples in Syria in the hellenistic period, from the conquest by Alexander the Great to the beginning of Roman rule, i.e. from c. 330 BC to c. 60 BC. For individual aspects it is necessary to treat earlier epoques, especially the period of Persian authority in Syria as well as aspects of Roman rule until early postchristian times. Geographically the focus is on the south-west Syrian regions.

The following aspects shall be treated:

Modes of life in the region,
Sedentarisation—nomadisation,
Economic relations between nomads and sedentary peoples,
Warlike contacts,
Nomads and hellenistic powers in the region,
Nomadic regional powers.

All aspects shall be analysed concerning the local and regional level as well as concerning the south-west Syrian region as a whole.
