Nomads without pastures?
Globalization, Regionalization and Livelihood Security

Programme

Many regions traditionally dominated by pastoral activities have been subject to far reaching transformations, generally including total or partial break-up of nomadic and pastoral systems. The project is concerned with the causes, processes and consequences of these transformations. Our focus is on globalization processes and their impact on livelihood security; thus, we analyse how regions  are created and constantly re-negotiated in the framework of global interdependence.

The project consists of two case studies: Rural Morocco, that is characterized by continuous de-nomadization, and the western highland areas of China, where a younger re-nomadization is now gradually followed by a process of modern re-configuration. Jörg Gertel is supervising and conceptionally coordinating the project.
